Q & A

Q. Why don't government or some pharmaceutical company conduct research and approve the most beneficial supplements, like Passion Flower, or Valerian, or Chamomile, or Hops, etc.?
A. The answer is simple - money. Any of such research would cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Company who invested so much money and conducted such research, usually have exclusive rights to sell the product to pay for research and then, make a profit. But, if after approval, anybody can produce and cell it, would you, personally, invest millions in such research and approval? Exactly...

Here, you can ask any question, big or small, about  sleep related problems. *Why my great medical doctor never advise me about supplements? *How supplements are regulated by government?. *Is hypnosis effective for sleep disorder? *What company makes the best quality supplements? *Can I help my child to sleep better with nutritional supplements? *What is the best cure for Anxiety? Etc., etc.

Please ask any question you have and we'll answer to the best of our knowledge. Regardless... Remember - the worst question is the one which have never been asked.

Q.Is it true that not enough sleep may cause a weight gain?

A.It is true. Several studies have reported associations between short duration of sleep and obesity.
A review of 30 studies, for example, found a connection between less sleep and weight gain in children and adults. Another study found that even nurses who slept 5 hours or fewer were more likely to have obesity than those who slept 7 hours on average. A possible reason for the association is that being tired may change the brain in a way that leads to excess eating.
Meanwhile, another study found that lack of sleep was linked to more emotional eating and trouble managing weight.

Q. What is RAM?

A. Our body must go through several sleep cycles per night, including rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and non-REM sleep to be properly rested. If the body does not go through these stages several times a night, the person may wake feeling fatigued and unfocused.

Stage 1 - non-REM: This lasts for only a few minutes. Breathing, heart rate, and brain waves begin to slow.
Stage 2 - non-REM: This stage occurs before the body enters deep sleep. The muscles relax even more, and body temperature drops.
Stage 3 - non-REM: A person needs to reach this stage of deep sleep to feel rested, and it lasts longer in the first half of the night. Breathing and heart rate slow to their lowest levels.
REM sleep: Within 90 minutes of falling asleep, a person enters REM sleep. The brain becomes more active, the most dreaming occurs during that time and the arms and legs become temporarily paralyzed.

Q.Is 7-9 hours of sleep good for everybody?

A. Not exactly. According to NSF, National Sleep Foundation, recommended amount of sleep is different for the different age groups. Newborns (0–3 months): 14–17 hours. Infants (4–11 months): 12–15 hours. Toddlers (1–2 years): 11–14 hours. Preschoolers (3–5 years): 10–13 hours. School-age children (6–13 years): 9–11 hours. Teenagers (14–17 years): 8–10 hours.Younger adults (18–25 years): 7–9 hours. Adults (26–64 years): 7–9 hours. Older adults (65 years and above): 7–8 hours.

Q. Why my great medical doctor never advise me about supplements?

A. Doctors have historically received almost no nutritional training, which limits their ability to effectively talk to patients about it. During four years of medical school, most students spend fewer than 20 hours on nutrition. According to experts, most physicians may recognize that diet is influential in health, but they don't learn enough about nutrition in medical school or the training programs. Dr. Michael Mosley, presenter of BBC One's Trust Me I'm A Doctor, said, "Unfortunately it's not part of the traditional training. At medical school I learnt almost nothing about nutrition. And I have a son at medical school and it's again not part of his key curriculum. One study “assessing the clinical nutrition knowledge of medical doctors” found the majority got 70 percent of the questions wrong. And they were multiple choice questions, so they should have gotten a fifth right just by chance. Not only medical doctors have a limited training in the subject of nutrition, they are also not authorized to give any advise or recommendations about any unapproved by government nutritional supplements, except some limited number of vitamins and minerals. It is also important to consider the fact that medical doctors are so busy that they are simply don't have any time to study nutritional supplements at all.

Q. Is compounding and sale of nutritional supplements regulated by government?

A. Supplements are not considered by the FDA as a drug and its production and quality is regulated the same way as of any food. The FDA does not review supplements for efficacy before they hit the market. The simple requirements are: it must be produced and packaged in a appropriate sanitary environment and it should not promise to cure any disease.

Q. Is Mind/Body practices good for Sleep Disorder?

A. Research has demonstrated beneficial results of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) for people with chronic insomnia disorder. There is also some evidence suggesting that relaxation therapy may be useful for this.

Q. Why should I take Omega 3 fatty acid supplements. Isn't my body produce enough of it?

A. Omega 3 fatty acids are very important for our body's function. And, human body is incapable of creating them on its own — the fatty acids or their precursors must be obtained from the food. The family of omega-3 fatty acids includes: alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), stearidonic acid (SDA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA),
docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Food sources of DHA, EPA, and DPA include:
fatty fish, such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, menhaden, or herring, the liver of lean, white fish, such as halibut or cod, blubber from seals or whales, from cod flesh, tuna, haddock, flounder, or krill oil.

Q.  What Ginseng supplements is good for?

A.  Ginseng has traditionally been used for a number of medical conditions:
Build immunity. Some studies have found that ginseng may boost your immune system. There’s some evidence that one particular type of American ginseng extract might decrease the number and severity of colds in adults.
Regulate blood sugar. Several studies in people have also shown that ginseng may lower blood sugar levels. There’s some early evidence that ginseng might give a small, short-term boost to concentration and learning.
Ginseng has also been studied as a way to improve mood and boost endurance as well as treat:
Cancer, Heart disease, Fatigue, Erectile dysfunction, Hepatitis C, High blood pressure, Menopausal symptoms. You can get ginseng as a dietary supplement in the form of tea, dried herbs, powder, or capsules.

You can get ginseng as a dietary supplement in the form of tea, dried herbs, powder, or capsules.

Ginseng side effects are generally mild. Caffeine may amplify ginseng’s stimulant effects.
It has been reported to cause nervousness and insomnia.

Q. What food is contain Potassium?

A. Many of the foods that you already eat contain potassium. The foods listed below are high in potassium. If you need to boost the amount of potassium in your diet, make healthy food choices by picking items below to add to your menu: Bananas, oranges, cantaloupe, honeydew, apricots, grapefruit (some dried fruits, such as prunes, raisins, and dates, are also high in potassium), Cooked spinach, Cooked broccoli, Potatoes, Sweet potatoes, Mushrooms, Peas, Cucumbers, Zucchini, Pumpkins. Juice from potassium-rich fruit is also a good choice: Orange juice, Tomato juice, Grapefruit juice. Some fish also contain potassium: Tuna, Halibut, Cod,   Trout, Rockfish. Beans or legumes that are high in potassium include: Lima beans, Pinto beans, Kidney beans, Soybeans,  Lentils.

Other foods: Molasses, Nuts, Meat and poultry, Brown and wild rice, Bran cereal, Whole-wheat bread and pasta.                                                                                                                                                                                    Why You Need Potassium? For starters, it helps your blood pressure. It does this in two different ways:
First, with the aid of your kidneys, potassium helps remove extra sodium from your body through your urine. This is a good thing, because too much sodium can cause high blood pressure.
Second, potassium helps the walls of your blood vessels to relax or loosen up. When they’re too tense or rigid, it can lead to high blood pressure, which can cause heart problems. Getting enough potassium is good for your heart.
You also need enough potassium for good muscle health -- so that your muscles can flex or contract the way they should. And your nerves need potassium so that they can work well.
